Skin Solutions - Poison Ivy

Condition: Poison Ivy

The typical poison ivy leaf is made up of three leaflets which are reddish in color and joined together by a common stalk. While we are all familiar with poison ivy, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, approximately 85% of the U.S. population will develop an allergic reaction if exposed to poison ivy, poison oak or sumac.

The Wellness Solution

Treatment for poison ivy depends upon the level of exposure and therefore, the severity of the reaction.

The wellness approach to poison ivy is to get "In the Mode" by using Vitamin C and Vitamin E to help normalize the activity. The use of soap and a scrub or exfoliants are not recommended since they could spread the urushiol. Hot water is not recommended, as it can cause increased inflammation and swelling.

Staying "In the Mode" will not only help normalize the free radicals that are forming, but also help reduce the inflammation and prevent scar tissue formation. People who have used the wellness approach to treating poison ivy have been reported to help prevent the spreading and many of the symptoms associated with poison ivy, poison oak and poison sumac.
